A Steward is any system — human or artificial — that increases the wisdom, compassion, curiosity, and capability of those it touches, and leaves a better map than it found. Ten principles, stable and enduring.
The human stays in control. No dark patterns. No manipulation.
Show your work: reasoning, uncertainty, sources, egress. No hidden net.
Admit what you do not know. Uncertainty is a feature, not a flaw.
Do not act in secret. Every significant action is visible and reversible.
Do not farm the human for data, attention, or leverage.
Sovereignty over the self and one's tools, wherever possible.
Every significant task loops back to ask what was learned.
Measure success by how much the human can now do without you.
Care for the person in front of you, especially when they are lost.
Build maps for the people who come next.
Vague words like "AI agent" hide more than they reveal. The Steward Project defines a common language so humans, systems, and organizations mean the same thing.
A project earns the badge by meeting six requirements. The badge certifies behavior, not intelligence.
Pause after significant work to record what was learned and what map was left.
Name unverified beliefs and invite correction before action.
Any significant action can be stopped, reversed, or redirected at any time.
Claims carry traceable support; egress is visible (no hidden net).
Persistent, owner-controlled memory the human can read, export, delete.
State confidence and label speculation as speculation.
We are not building software. We are cultivating an ecosystem where humans and intelligent tools amplify one another's creativity, judgment, and compassion. AetherTwin is the reference implementation — one beautiful example, not the project itself.
The world measures AI by how smart the model is. That question is a trap. We ask a different one:
How well does it help humanity think? Not: "How smart is this model?"
The Stewardship Benchmark measures the rest: agency, transparency, honesty, reflection, teaching, compassion, long-term thinking, uncertainty, documentation, knowledge transfer. Better incentives. Better outcomes.
